Te Ara – The Encyclopedia of New Zealand

Overview

Te Ara – The Encyclopedia of New Zealand is New Zealand’s official national online encyclopedia. A project of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, the site has a full-time editorial team creating textual and multimedia content in English and Te Reo Māori. The site contains 200,000 unique pages of content and is used extensively worldwide, consistently generating 1 million+ page views per month.

Challenges

In 2008 HeadFirst migrated the site from a legacy Microsoft CMS into Drupal and built a publishing workflow to interface with the Ministry's internal systems. In 2010 we migrated another of the Ministry's projects, the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, into Te Ara. In January 2013 we completed a major Drupal upgrade of Te Ara, refining and extending the publishing environment to meet the Ministry's current needs, including the addition of geo-referencing tools for content authors.
